How to read the 2027 holiday table
The first table lists the eleven U.S. federal holidays on the OPM schedule for 2027. “Date” is the day the law sets for the holiday. The last column shows the day most federal employees have off. It is the same date unless the holiday falls on a weekend.
New Year’s Day 2028 is in the table because January 1, 2028 is a Saturday, which moves the day off to Friday, December 31, 2027.
- Juneteenth National Independence Day: Saturday, June 19, 2027, observed on Friday, June 18, 2027
- Independence Day: Sunday, July 4, 2027, observed on Monday, July 5, 2027
- Christmas Day: Saturday, December 25, 2027, observed on Friday, December 24, 2027
- New Year’s Day 2028: Saturday, January 1, 2028, observed on Friday, December 31, 2027
How federal holiday dates are set
5 U.S.C. 6103(a) names the legal public holidays and the rule for each date. The rules below produce every 2027 date in the table.
- New Year’s Day: January 1.
- Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.: the third Monday in January.
- Washington’s Birthday: the third Monday in February.
- Memorial Day: the last Monday in May.
- Juneteenth National Independence Day: June 19.
- Independence Day: July 4.
- Labor Day: the first Monday in September.
- Columbus Day: the second Monday in October.
- Veterans Day: November 11.
- Thanksgiving Day: the fourth Thursday in November.
- Christmas Day: December 25.
Observed days in 2027
A holiday on a Saturday is observed on the Friday before, under 5 U.S.C. 6103(b). A holiday on a Sunday is observed on the Monday after, which OPM bases on Executive Order 11582. These rules apply to most federal employees; employees on other work schedules can have different days off.
Common observances in 2027
The second table lists dates that many calendars show. They are not federal holidays, and they are not days off. Easter Sunday is calculated with the Gregorian rule for the date of Easter, and daylight saving time dates follow the second Sunday in March and the first Sunday in November.
- Sunday, February 14, 2027: Valentine’s Day
- Sunday, March 14, 2027: Daylight saving time begins
- Wednesday, March 17, 2027: St. Patrick’s Day
- Sunday, March 28, 2027: Easter Sunday
- Thursday, April 22, 2027: Earth Day
- Sunday, May 9, 2027: Mother’s Day
- Sunday, June 20, 2027: Father’s Day
- Sunday, October 31, 2027: Halloween
- Sunday, November 7, 2027: Daylight saving time ends
- Friday, December 24, 2027: Christmas Eve
- Friday, December 31, 2027: New Year’s Eve
Who follows these dates
Federal holidays set the days off for federal employees. Banks, schools, state and local governments and private employers choose their own schedules, and many follow the federal list while others do not. This page does not cover state holidays. Check with your employer, school or bank before you plan around a date.
Common questions
How many federal holidays are there in 2027?
Eleven, as listed by OPM. Three of them fall on a weekend: Juneteenth (Saturday), Independence Day (Sunday) and Christmas Day (Saturday). New Year’s Day 2028 also lands on a Saturday, so Friday, December 31, 2027 is the observed day off.
Is Independence Day observed on Monday, July 5, 2027?
For most federal employees, yes. July 4, 2027 is a Sunday, so the following Monday is the holiday for pay and leave purposes.
Are Easter, Mother’s Day and Halloween federal holidays?
No. They are observances. They are shown separately and marked as not days off.
Where do these dates come from?
From 5 U.S.C. 6103 and the OPM federal holiday schedule. The site computes them from the statute’s rules, and the 2027 dates are checked against OPM’s published 2027 schedule.
Can I add these holidays to my calendar app?
This page offers a CSV file for spreadsheets and a printable calendar. It does not make a calendar-app file.
