How holidays are marked on the 2027 calendar
The page shows all twelve months of 2027 on one sheet. Marks follow the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) schedule of federal holidays, and each month below the grid lists the dates in words so the page works in black and white.
- Filled red box: a federal holiday, or the weekday that most federal employees observe when a holiday falls on a weekend.
- Red outline: the holiday itself falls on a Saturday or Sunday, so the day off is moved to the filled box nearby.
- Gray ring and italic text: an observance such as Valentine’s Day or Mother’s Day. Observances are not federal holidays and not days off.
- Untick “Show observances” for a page with federal holidays only.
U.S. federal holidays in 2027
OPM lists eleven federal holidays for 2027. Three of them, plus New Year’s Day 2028, land on a weekend, so the day off moves.
- Friday, January 1, 2027: New Year’s Day
- Monday, January 18, 2027: Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.
- Monday, February 15, 2027: Washington’s Birthday
- Monday, May 31, 2027: Memorial Day
- Saturday, June 19, 2027: Juneteenth National Independence Day (day off: Friday, June 18, 2027)
- Sunday, July 4, 2027: Independence Day (day off: Monday, July 5, 2027)
- Monday, September 6, 2027: Labor Day
- Monday, October 11, 2027: Columbus Day
- Thursday, November 11, 2027: Veterans Day
- Thursday, November 25, 2027: Thanksgiving Day
- Saturday, December 25, 2027: Christmas Day (day off: Friday, December 24, 2027)
- Saturday, January 1, 2028: New Year’s Day 2028 (day off: Friday, December 31, 2027)
What “observed” means
Under 5 U.S.C. 6103(b), a federal holiday that falls on a Saturday is observed on the Friday before for most federal employees. A holiday that falls on a Sunday is observed on the Monday after, as OPM explains with a reference to Executive Order 11582. In 2027 that moves Juneteenth to Friday, June 18, Independence Day to Monday, July 5, and Christmas Day to Friday, December 24.
January 1, 2028 is a Saturday, so most federal employees have Friday, December 31, 2027 off. OPM lists that day on its 2028 schedule, and this calendar shows it in December 2027.
Observances are not days off
The sheet also marks dates many calendars show, such as Valentine’s Day, Easter Sunday, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Halloween and New Year’s Eve. They are not federal holidays and do not change anyone’s work schedule. Daylight saving time begins on Sunday, March 14, 2027 and ends on Sunday, November 7, 2027 in most of the United States; Arizona (except the Navajo Nation) and Hawaii do not change their clocks.
